Jailhouse Shock: The FormerPresident Bolsonaro Faces Life Behind Bars
He battled the legal system and the legal system prevailed.
Two months after receiving a 27-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” Brazil’s democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro finally seems destined for incarceration.
Expected Imprisonment
The found-guilty plotter – who had been subject to house arrest in his estate while a series of judicial steps and petitions proceed – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the near future, amidst increasing rumors that he will be moved to a well-known maximum security facility.
Historical Statements on Inmates
Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the conservative ex- soldier exhibited scant mercy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.
“What’s the need to give these scoundrels a easy time?” he once mused. “They should just get messed, end of story. That's my view.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro declared: “Unless you desire to wind up in prison, you simply need is to avoid rape, abduction or theft.”
Jail Location Discussion
However the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, several of whom this week toured the complex in an obvious effort to discourage the supreme court from sending him there.
The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, said he anticipated the septuagenarian figure to be incarcerated in the next 10 days and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal issues – the consequence of a life-threatening assault during the 2018 election race – implied it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His condition is extremely serious. He will not be able to cope if they send him to Papuda … It could be terrible,” he added, who also expressed concern about overcrowded cells and the standard of jail cuisine.
While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells containing 40 detainees: “It's virtually one meter squared per prisoner.
“We conversed to the prisoners and they grumble, naturally, of the terrible meals,” remarked the senator.
Supporters Speak Out
The senator isn't the only voice expressing views ahead of the ex-leader's expected detention.
Writing in a major newspaper, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” public service and asserted Brazil was about to see “the greatest unfairness in its past”.
“It is an unfairness that gnaws the souls of many people in Brazil,” the former minister said.
Divided Public Response
This could be correct due to the substantial backing Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. But his anticipated jailing has also warmed the feelings of many others who feel he deserves to be jailed for plotting to stop the incoming president from becoming president – and also plotting to have him killed.
Reimont Otoni, a representative for the incumbent leader's allied group, commented: “Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be sent in a hole. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to obtain dignified treatment – but respectful care in prison. He can’t persist being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”
He observed how Bolsonaro allies, who have long praising the tough conditions of convicts, had abruptly woken up to their entitlements. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has always asserted that basic rights were not for lawbreakers – opted to visit a penitentiary to find out what circumstances are really like,” he stated.
“He is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “humiliating, demeaning treatment”.
Potential Prison Environment
Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently contains about thousands of prisoners, his expected destination seems to be a close penitentiary for officers and other “unique” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
His potential cell are considerably more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nonetheless a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while living in the spectacular leader's home, around a short distance away.
As per reports, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to occupy in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – roughly the area of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 sq metre restroom with a bathing area and a 12 square meter balcony. “He could be allowed to have a television and also a minibar in his room as long as they were provided by his family,” information indicated.
Partisan Responses
He denounced the talked-about idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of retaliation” on the part of the judicial authority who oversaw Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will decide his fate in the {
