This past summer, revised directives were rolled out to address the spread of misinformation on social media, which had intensified after the deadly attack of three schoolgirls in Southport previously.

Yet, campaigners have raised concerns that this move could lead to an overemphasis on the ethnicity of suspects and spark further rightwing conspiracy theories when information are withheld with the public.

“It’s not ideal, but I comprehend the reasons. They essentially have no choice at this point,” he commented, stating that social media are leveraged to advance narratives, making it critical for law enforcement to provide facts to counter speculation.

Far-Right Exploitation

Prior to the official disclosure, conservative figures had demanded a quicker action. For instance, Chris Philp pushed for timely release of identity details, while the Reform UK leader stated on X that the people should be informed “as soon as possible”.

Moreover, far-right social media accounts attempted to exploit the event. One account named “British Patriot”—with nearly 5,000 followers—circulated an baseless allegation that a individual with a blade had been shouting a religious phrase.

Persistent Doubts

Despite authorities confirmed that the arrested individuals were UK citizens, some individuals continued to insinuate that information was being withheld. A former Reform UK co-leader stated it was “hard to believe” that the incident was not an act of terrorism, contrary to police assurances to the opposite.
