Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Prison Memoir Documenting Three Weeks In Custody

The ex-president of France plans a personal account in the coming weeks titled Diary of a Prisoner, detailing the period spent in custody.

This news emerged less than two weeks following the ex-leader was released while he contests his conviction for unlawful coordination connected to efforts to acquire political financing from the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Time in Custody: Personal Reflections

“In prison one sees little, and activities are scarce,” he notes in one passage, indicating the account will focus on his musings during isolation rather than extensive analysis regarding the strained and troubled French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, not present in that facility, where there is a lot to hear,” he adds. “The racket unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, one’s inner world grows stronger behind bars.”

Court Appearance: Sharing the Struggle

During his plea for freedom, he participated remotely from a room in prison, characterizing his incarceration as gruelling. He had told the court: “I wish to commend the correctional officers, who are exceptionally humane, and who helped make this difficult experience tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I didn’t expect that at 70 years of age, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal I must endure. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It leaves a mark all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”

First of Its Kind

The former president, the ex-head of state between 2007 and 2012, became the inaugural ex-leader in the European Union and the first postwar leader in the French Republic to serve time in prison.

Ahead of his incarceration he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Books in Prison

It is not certain if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the three books he took into prison: a life story of Jesus spanning two books plus the novel by Dumas the classic tale, a plot where a wrongfully accused individual is sentenced to jail later flees to seek vengeance.

Life in Confinement

The former leader remained secluded to protect him in a room approximately nine square meters with his own shower and toilet at the correctional facility located in the capital. Security personnel occupied the next cell.

Sources mentioned that he consumed only yoghurts while inside due to concerns meals provided could have been tampered with. Although he had access to prepare his own meals yet he declined, based on unnamed sources. It is uncertain whether Sarkozy will write about meals during incarceration.

Lawyer’s Statements

His attorney, who visited his client daily throughout the jail term, told the release hearing his safety would improve outside jail than inside. “He has faced menacing messages, listened to yells after dark plus rapid actions next door during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Legal Proceedings

His incarceration began on 21 October following a Paris court imposed a half-decade term for illegal collaboration related to a plan to secure election financing during his election campaign.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, and another court case is scheduled for the coming spring.
