Preparations for Trump-Putin Summit Delayed Shortly Following Budapest Negotiations Proposed

Currently exist "no plans" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has declared.

Recently Trump said he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest in the coming fortnight to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House said the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The White House did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been postponed.

Earlier Events

The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with sources indicating the president had pushed him to give up extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.

However, on Monday Trump embraced a truce plan backed by Kyiv and European leaders to halt the war on the present positions.

"Leave it as is the way it is," he said.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the current line of contact.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, suggesting that freezing the front line would only amount to a short-term truce.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the conflict demanded attention, Lavrov stated, using Moscow's terminology for a range of comprehensive conditions that involve the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president stated talks regarding the current lines were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.

He additionally stated the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unscheduled call with the US leader recently preceded speculation that the US was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the missiles had emerged as a "strong investment" in negotiations", he commented.
