The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Details Its Implementation of Generative AI for New Project

The team behind acclaimed role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its upcoming project, creating significant hype within the gaming community. However, recent remarks from the company's co-founder have introduced a new dimension to the discussion, touching on the team's philosophy toward AI tools.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a new message, the studio's founder explained that the company is utilizing generative AI for specific supporting tasks. These encompass developing presentation materials, producing rough visual ideas, and drafting placeholder copy.

Crucially, Vincke stressed that the shipping assets in the game will be authored solely by actual artists. "We are writing every line in-house," he stated.

Larian is actively expanding our team of concept artists and are currently assembling writing teams.

Given that this area is being specifically called out — we presently have over twenty artistic staff and have job openings for more talent.

All our efforts we do is additive and aimed at enabling creatives to spend additional energy on the creative process.

Every machine learning application used well is a boost to a developer's routine, not a replacement for their craft.

Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent

The admission of AI usage at first generated unease among portions of the player base. In reply, Vincke provided further clarification on social media.

"We use AI tools to explore references, similar to we use search engines and physical media," he stated. "In the initial ideation stages we use it as a basic framework for composition which we then replace with hand-crafted illustrations."

He added, "Larian brings on creatives for their unique talent, not for their ability to replicate what a machine suggests."

Three Pillars of Practical Application

Vincke had previously detailed the studio's targeted strategy to this technology, categorizing its use into three main functions:

  • Streamlining Repetitive Work: Areas like motion capture cleaning, dialogue cleanup, and pipeline-specific tasks like adapting animations for different models.
  • Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using systems to speedily create simple models of gameplay ideas to test concepts ahead of expensive production.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Researching how AI could one day create emergent player agency, specifically in managing unforeseen permutations in a vast role-playing world.

He explicitly noted that key artistic areas — like visual art — are not departments where the company is reducing human talent. On the contrary, Larian is actively hiring in these precise fields.

"Larian is neither shipping a game with AI-generated content, nor considering reducing creatives to substitute them with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
