Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her American tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
