The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.

Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as among these.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
