Three Lions Coach Reveals The Vision: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, Barry competed at a lower division club. Now, he is focused to assist the head coach win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. The road from the pitch to the sidelines began with a voluntary role for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He discovered his purpose.

Rapid Rise

Barry's progression stands out. Starting with his first major job, he established a reputation for innovative drills and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs took him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on roles with national teams across multiple countries. His players include stars like top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the top in his words.

“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a methodical process that allows us to have the best chance.”

Focus on Minutiae

Dedication, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours all the time, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies feature mental assessments, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. The coach highlights “Team England” and dislikes phrases including "pause".

“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” he explains. “We needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Greedy Coaches

The assistant coach says along with the manager as “very greedy”. “We aim to control each element of play,” he states. “We strive to own the whole ground and we dedicate many of our days on. It’s our job to not only anticipate of changes but to surpass them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We have 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We must implement a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from concept to details to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive during the limited time, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections among them. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”

World Cup Qualifiers

He is getting ready for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; instead. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.

“We are both certain that our playing approach ought to embody the best aspects about the Premier League,” he comments. “The physicality, the versatility, the robustness, the integrity. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer an approach that enables them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.

“There are emotional wins you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, attacking high up. However, in midfield of the pitch, those 24 metres, we believe play has stagnated, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information currently. They can organize – structured defenses. We are really trying to speed up play in that central area.”

Thirst for Improvement

Barry’s hunger to get better knows no bounds. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns regarding the final talk, since his group included stars such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he entered difficult settings imaginable to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, where he coached prisoners in a football drill.

He earned his license with top honors, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – got into print. Frank was one of those won over and he hired Barry as part of his backroom at Chelsea. When Frank was fired, it was telling that the team dismissed virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.

His replacement at Chelsea was Tuchel, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued with Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged at Munich, he got Barry out of Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
