Ultra-Conservative Former Lawmaker J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile New President.
Following a conclusive second-round vote, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.
A Resounding Triumph
After over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been lost by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Platform Centered On Security and Migration
Noted for his unwavering Catholic views and praise for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was primarily focused on promises to combat rising insecurity and significantly curb immigration.
He consistently cited immigrants, notably the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the election cycle, he issued an ultimatum for them to depart before the new term begins or face deportation.
His policy ideas envisioned U.S.-style measures such as erecting detention centers, barriers, perimeter fencing, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northern border.
Amid a Broader Trend
Several analysts see Kast's victory as fitting into a wider conservative shift in Latin America, following this year's electoral outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other experts further frame it as a continuation of the established rotation of power between left and right-wing governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Governing Without a Solid Mandate
In spite of his clear electoral victory, Kast will not have an overall majority in parliament, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if various right-leaning parties are counted together.
This political reality might complicate his agenda, including a vow to cut public spending by billions within 18 months—a proposal for which he has not provided a clear explanation.
"We have several things about what a Kast government will operate that are uncertain because he has not explained the way he will achieve them," commented a political analyst.
The expert continued, "On fiscal matters, it is very likely we will see spending cuts typical of the right. However the area with much less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his central theme during the race."
