What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
